The Meaning

Not just a word.

不只是一個字。是一種餵養人的方式。

In Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, and Odia, bhabhi means your elder brother's wife. But in everyday Indian life, it means something more specific than that — and more important.

在印地語、旁遮普語、孟加拉語和奧里薩語中,「嫂嫂」(bhabhi)意指大哥的妻子。但在印度的日常生活中,它代表著更具體——也更重要——的意義。

Bhabhi is the woman who runs the kitchen. Not because she was told to, but because she is the one who knows. She knows that your brother likes his dal a little thicker. She knows that your father takes his chai without sugar on cold mornings and with one spoon on warm ones. She knows that you always come home hungry even when you say you're not.

嫂嫂是管理廚房的女人。不是因為有人叫她這麼做,而是因為她最懂。她知道你大哥喜歡扁豆湯濃一點。她知道你父親在寒冷的早晨喝不加糖的茶,在暖和的日子加一匙糖。她知道你回家的時候,就算嘴裡說不餓,其實一定餓了。

She feeds you before you ask. She always cooks a little extra. There is never a moment in her kitchen where there is not enough.

在你開口之前,她就端上食物。她總是多煮一點。在她的廚房裡,永遠不會不夠吃。

This is the person our restaurant is named after. Not a concept. Not a brand. The actual person — in millions of Indian homes — who is the reason the kitchen stays warm.

我們的餐廳就是以這樣的人命名的。不是一個概念,不是一個品牌,而是真實存在的人——在印度千萬個家庭中——讓廚房永遠溫暖的那個人。

We are an Indian restaurant, which means we come from a tradition where this figure — the bhabhi, the woman who feeds — has a specific and honoured place. Odia cooking is home cooking. It was never hotel food. It was never performance food. It was food made by someone who knew you.

我們是一家印度餐廳,這意味著我們來自一個傳統——在這個傳統中,嫂嫂這個角色有著特殊而受尊重的地位。奧里薩邦的烹飪是家常料理,從來都不是飯店的食物,也不是表演用的食物,而是由認識你的人做的食物。

When we opened Bhabhi in Hsinchu, we wanted to bring that feeling to Taiwan. Not the idea of Indian food. The actual food — made with the same attention, the same unhurried care, the same instinct to give a little more than was asked for.

當我們在新竹開設 Bhabhi 時,我們希望將這種感覺帶到台灣。不是印度食物的概念,而是真正的食物——用同樣的用心、同樣從容的細心、同樣給予多一點的直覺所烹調的食物。

Every dish we cook is an attempt to be that person. The one who knows. The one who already has the pot on.

我們烹調的每一道菜,都是一種嘗試——成為那個懂你的人。那個鍋子已經在爐上的人。

That is the Bhabhi. She reads the room before you enter it. This restaurant is named after her — and tries, every day, to cook with that same quiet instinct.

那就是嫂嫂。她在你進門前就已讀懂了氛圍。這家餐廳以她命名,並努力每天以同樣沉靜的直覺來烹調料理。

Odia cuisine comes from the eastern coast of India — shaped by the Bay of Bengal, by centuries of pilgrimage to Puri, by rice paddies and coconut trees and spices ground fresh every morning. It is not the curry-house food most people know. It is subtler, older, and deeply tied to the idea of cooking as offering.

奧里薩邦料理來自印度東岸——由孟加拉灣、數百年來前往普里的朝聖之旅、稻田、椰子樹和每天早晨新鮮研磨的香料所塑造。它不是大多數人熟悉的咖哩館食物,而是更細膩、更古老,並與烹飪作為奉獻的理念深深相連的料理。
