Year-End Company Dinners in Hsinchu — Why Indian Food Works

On 尾牙 season, the problem with predictable banquets, and what actually makes a meal memorable

Year-End Company Dinners in Hsinchu — Why Indian Food Works

November in Hsinchu means one thing for anyone who works in the Science Park: 尾牙 season. The annual company dinner — a tradition rooted in Taiwanese folk custom, now firmly embedded in corporate culture — fills every restaurant with team lunches and department gatherings for six straight weeks.

Most of these dinners are excellent, traditional, and entirely predictable. The same Taiwanese banquet menu, the same round table with the lazy Susan, the same toasts in the same order. There is nothing wrong with this. But after ten years of the same format, there is an appetite for something different.

Why international teams respond to Indian food differently

Hsinchu's tech sector is one of the most multinational workforces in Asia. A single team at a major semiconductor company might include people from India, the Netherlands, Korea, the United States, and five different regions of Taiwan. The traditional 尾牙 banquet is appropriate for most of them. But it is not a shared experience in the way that food can be a shared experience.

North Indian food, served family-style, with shared dishes and bread passed around the table — this format cuts across backgrounds in a way that individual-plate service does not. The ritual of tearing naan, passing a serving dish, arguing gently about which curry to try next, is universal in a way that resonates with multinational teams.

A meal that requires people to pass things to each other is a better team dinner than a meal where everyone faces their own plate.
